Sprengeri Seed Shortage

Introducing Asparagus Myriocladus Ming Fern

As many of you know, there is a shortage of Asparagus Sprengeri seed for the spring 2020 growing season.  Asparagus Sprengeri has been a staple accent plant in our industry for many years.  The seed shortage has created a void in many accent programs.

Mast Young Plants was able to purchase Asparagus Sprengeri seed for spring of 2020, but orders came in quickly and all the Asparagus sold out.

Our Innovating Department trialed other types of Asparagus to be able to offer a sub and has seen success with Asparagus Myriocladus.  This variety is more upright and with finer needles.  Initially we had concern about if it could stand up to full sun as it is often used in cut flower arrangements, but we placed a pot in full sun this August and the plant did not show any sunburn or sun scald.

We have purchased seed of this item and sowed trays in week 40.  We are excited to announce that we will be showing availability on this item starting in week 4.

This variety being more upright will most likely not make great hanging baskets but should fit well in pint or quart accent programs.  It may also work well to provide texture in combination planters.  The growth rate of this variety is similar to Asparagus Sprengeri but may be a little bit slower and we would suggest that customers bring them in a bit earlier than they are used to with Sprengeri.
